Overdraft Protection Options

It's easy to make your checking account fit your busy lifestyle! At SAFE, we provide protection from budget miscalculations, so an oversight doesn't put your account at risk for unnecessary fees or declined debit card transactions.

SAFE offers three convenient options to cover your account:

If you write a check, authorize a payment, withdraw cash at an ATM, or use your debit card to make a purchase when there are not enough available funds* in your checking account, SAFE can transfer funds from your designated Overdraft Protection source to your checking account.

Choose the Overdraft Protection source you prefer: your SAFE Visa® Credit Card, SAFE Home Equity Line of Credit, SAFE Savings Account, or SAFE Money Market Account.

  • You'll only pay a fee if and when you use the service.
  • The service is free for overdraft transfers that total less than $6.
  • You'll be charged a maximum of one $6 fee for all transfers in one day.
  • The overdraft transfer fee is waived for members with Perfect Cents Checking or enrolled in Capitol Club.

*Available funds means the balance in your account reflecting any authorized debit card transactions waiting to clear your account and deposit holds. Available balance may not include pending bill pay items or checks written by you that have not been presented for payment. You can view your available balance when you review your account online, at an ATM, by phone, or at a SAFE branch.

Courtesy Pay is a standard overdraft protection service that comes with personal SAFE checking accounts for checks and electronic items when there are not enough available funds in your checking account.1

For overdrafts caused by checks, automatic bill payments, and other transactions using your checking account:

  • You'll only pay a fee if and when you use the service.
  • You'll be charged a maximum of two fees per day when you use the service.
  • The Courtesy Pay overdraft transaction fee is $30.

As a SAFE checking account holder in good standing, you're automatically enrolled!

Account must meet credit union criteria for Courtesy Pay service. Whether your overdrafts will be paid is discretionary, and we reserve the right not to pay if your account is not in good standing. A fee of up to $30 may be charged for each SAFE check, ATM or debit card transaction, or debit by other electronic means when you do not have enough money available in your account. The negative balance must be paid within 20 days. You may opt out of Courtesy Pay through Live Help, by contacting SAFE's Call Center at (916) 979-7233 or (800) SEE-SAFE, by visiting any SAFE branch, or mailing your written revocation to SAFE Credit Union, 2295 Iron Point Road, Suite 100, Folsom CA 95630-8765.

Choose to enroll in Debit Card Courtesy Pay to avoid the hassle of a declined transaction due to insufficient funds. As a courtesy to members in good standing, this optional service pays ATM and debit card transactions that would not have otherwise cleared.

For overdrafts caused by ATM and everyday debit card transactions:

  • You'll only pay a fee if and when you use the service.
  • You'll be charged a maximum of one fee per day when you use the service.
  • For small overdraft amounts, the fee may be as little as $2.
  • The fee is waived if you bring your balance positive before the end of the day.
  • You'll incur no daily fees for negative checking balances.

It's easy to add this affordable and convenient protection for your debit card transactions. But, SAFE can only authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM and everyday debit card transactions if you choose Courtesy Pay.

How does Debit Card Courtesy Pay work?

For overdrafts caused by ATM and everyday debit card transactions, members with smaller overdraft amounts benefit from lower fees.

End-of-day balance is your account balance after the branch closes for the business day, or generally at 6 p.m. PST each calendar day, and after all transactions including direct deposits, bill pay items, checks, and Automated Clearing House (ACH) items post to your account. You can generally avoid a Courtesy Pay fee by making a deposit before 6 p.m. PST. Be sure to deposit enough funds to cover your debit card transactions, bill pay items, checks, and ACH items that may clear that day.
